About Sonder's therapy sessions
If you're in therapy with Sonder and think you need more sessions, here's how it works.
How session numbers are decided
Sonder takes an outcome-focused approach to therapy. This means your treating psychologist or counsellor will design a personalised treatment plan based on your specific goals and needs.
The number of sessions you need depends on what you're working towards and how quickly you're making progress toward those goals. Some people need fewer sessions to reach their goals, others need many. Your treating clinician will work witth you and decide what's appropriate for your situation.
If you want more sessions
Talk to your treating therapist directly. If you feel you need more sessions, raise this with the psychologist or counsellor you're working with. They know your situation best.
If they agree that more sessions would help, they can request extended sessions with Sonder's Multi-Discipline Team (MDT). Sonder's Senior Clinical Psychologist will then review your treatment plan to make sure:
- Your goals are clear and realistic
- You're making progress toward them
- There's a specific plan for how many additional sessions you'll need and why
Once approved, your additional sessions will be arranged.
If it's a different issue
If you need support for a concern and you've just finished a treatment plan, you don't need to ask your therapist for more sessions. Instead, contact Sonder's Support Centre directly via the Sonder app to be re-triaged. They'll assess your new concern and get you the right support.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I just book extra sessions myself?
Sonder uses an outcome-focused model, which means every treatment plan has clear goals and a plan for achieving them. Your treating clinician coordinates that plan based on what you need. This ensures you get the right support, not just more of it.
What if my therapist says no to extra sessions?
Your therapist is basing that on what they think is best for your specific situation and goals. You can ask them to explain their recommendation. If you still disagree, you can reach out to Sonder's Support Centre to discuss your concerns.
Does Sonder have a limit on how many sessions I can have?
Access to Sonder is 24/7, and session numbers are determined by your treating clinician based on your needs and progress, not a fixed quota. If your clinician thinks you need more sessions, you'll get them.
What if I want to work on something completely different?
Contact Sonder's Support Centre and ask to be re-triaged. They'll assess your new concern and connect you with the right support, which might be your current therapist, a different clinician, or a different type of support altogether.
How long does it take to get approval for extra sessions?
Once your treating clinician requests extended sessions, Sonder's Senior Clinical Psychologist will review your plan and work with them to finalise it. The exact timeline depends on your situation, but your clinician will let you know what to expect.
Can I keep coming through for the same issue?
Mental health referrals for the same issue are typically limited to 2 per year without additional review. If you seek support for the same issue a 3rd time, Sonder's clinical team (Multi-Discipline Team) conducts a case review to assess whether previous treatments were effective and what approach might work better. This ensures therapy remains outcome-focused and that you, your therapist, and Sonder are aligned on goals.
What if I need support for something outside of Sonder's areas of expertise?
If your situation is better suited for specialist or long term care, our clinicians will recognise this and work with you to connect you with the right specialist or service that focuses on your specific need. We'll help you find the right place to get the care you need.
